Last week, we attended a summer festival in the city of Hirono as volunteers. This city was greatly affected by the tsunami in March 2011 and many of its citizens left their homes behind. Over the years, it has been rebuilt and it is currently looking for ways to attract more people to visit this beautiful city. On Sunday afternoon, we arrived at the festival and each volunteer had to help in a different position. I had the chance to be at the entrance; where attendees could write their wishes on colored papers; which we use to decorate the stand. The festival began at 3 p.m. and ended at 8 p.m. Apart from helping, we could also enjoy a traditional japaanese dance and fireworks.

The next day, we got up early; as we returned to the festival site to help clean up the trash with many other other volunteers. That same day, we visited a greenhouse where banana trees were planted. Other attractions we visited included the Tepco museum; where we learned about the development of the city of Hirono and the current state of the nuclear plant in Fukushima. It was a great opportunity to help and encourage people to visit Hirono and the beautiful attractions it offers; and also learn how little by little it is developing through festivals and selling products that locals harvest; as well as creating a sense of responsibility to the population through the Tepco museum which preserves the memory of the nuclear accident, the lessons learned as well as demonstrating rhe progress achieved over these past years.
